Board of Directors Election Candidates
Barry Rabin
Barry is a singer/songwriter, practicing attorney, and 30+ year member of the Philadelphia Folksong Society. Barry has been attending the Festival for decades, has played there multiple times, and is looking forward to its continued vitality.
His priorities if elected to the board will be:
– To provide for the Folk Festival’s (and the Society’s) continued financial viability
– To look for ways to attract a younger audience to the Festival
– To continue PFS’s support for the Philadelphia Musical Artists Cooperative and other efforts to support home-grown musicians and songwriters.
Cheryl Tocket
Cheryl has been involved with the Philadelphia Folk Festival and the Folksong Society since 2018 when her dear college friend, Betsy, insisted she join. After volunteering that year at the Fest, her love of music compelled her to continue that tradition every year since. Both of her sons (both drummers) followed suit the following year and a tradition was born. Cheryl has proudly volunteered as Greenroom chair for the past two years. Currently, Cheryl serves as a board director, coordinating the various monthly emails.
Cheryl has a degree in Elementary / Early Childhood Education with a minor in Fine Arts (photography concentration). She was employed as an elementary school and middle school teacher in New Jersey for 35 years, as well as being the Director of the High School Drama program for seven years.
Though Cheryl has retired from public education, she works as a seasonal program leader and farm staff in the Monmouth County Parks System at Historic Longstreet Farm, working with schools, small groups, and summer camp on the farm, managing the care of livestock, gardening, and performing field maintenance.
With nearly 40 years experience working with the public in education as well as retail sales, Cheryl brings strong public relations experience and is also capable of working with a variety of digital platforms. She is an amateur photographer in her spare time.
Nancy Schwartz
Marketing Chair Philadelphia Folk Festival
I am a creative and thoughtful marketing professional who studied marketing
communications at Temple University. I have dedicated my career to developing
meaningful strategies and communications campaigns that have helped businesses and
organizations to succeed with their products and services.
I first attended the Phila Folk Festival with a group of young friends long ago when
Andrew Braunfeld was leading PFF and Tom Rush and Tom Paxton were regular
performers . (I still can’t believe that my parents let me attend without adult supervision.)
What an amazing and joyful experience! Three days of music, dancing, camping and
making new friends as a volunteer on the Camping Committee. Today, I see that same
joy in the hearts of my beautiful great nieces who have grown up attending PFF with
their parents and grandparents.
So last year with about 8 weeks until fest, I was asked to fill an unplanned gap in
marketing. I jumped in with both feet to co-lead the marketing initiative and was able to
help make the 2025 PFF a success. I worked with the board and the festival leadership
team, determined which marketing initiatives still needed to happen and was able to
calmly put out a few fires along the way. Such fun to be totally immersed in PFF again!
I am running for the board so there will be an ear and a voice on the board that
understands marketing issues and strategies. This will help the Philadelphia Folksong
Society focus on the evolving future of folk music while respecting the traditions that got
us to this point. I am certain that my collaborative style coupled with the combination of
a successful marketing career and my understanding of the beauty that is the folk
festival will benefit the Philadelphia Folksong Society and the Philadelphia Folk Festival.
Jess Hull Meyers
Folk music and art tells our stories from the voices of our community. My goal is to again serve on the PFS Board to ensure growth in our community’s opportunities to share songs, stories, and experiences together. As a Fest-baby, I have been involved with the Philadelphia Folksong Society my entire life.
I recently served on the PFS Board of Directors in 2024 and was proud to serve on the leadership team that revived the Philadelphia Folk Festival. In addition, my PFF leadership experiences as Co-Chair of Society Outreach in 2025 and Assistant Chair of the Main Gate committee from 2018–2024 have allowed me opportunities to welcome Festival guests with smiles while spreading the word about the PFS community and membership opportunities.
As an educator with 18 years of experience as a School Administrator, Educational Specialist, and Special Education Teacher, I bring a strong foundation in leadership, community-building, and organizational systems. As a mother, I am deeply committed to nurturing our youth and growing the future of folk music and expression. As a campfire singer and avid music-listener, I enjoy lifting my voice to sing and dance with fellow folkies.
I believe PFS is uniquely positioned to again deepen partnerships throughout the Philadelphia region, expanding access to folk music and related forms of expression for community-members of all ages and abilities. Preserving the past and serving the future means investing in education, outreach, and youth engagement. This is my vision for pairing my leadership skills with my lifelong passion for Folk and our loving PFS community!
