An Exciting Showing for Folk Fest and Folksong Society Alums at the 2020 Grammys!
While the Grammys often center around Pop and R&B, here at the Philadelphia Folksong Society we are so proud of our venue and Fest alums who earned both nominations and Grammy wins this year!
For Best Regional Roots Music Album, both the Rebirth Brass Band and Ranky Tanky were nominated, with Ranky Tanky taking home the win. Ranky Tanky performed on the Fest Mainstage in 2017, the Rebirth Brass Band in 2014!
Patty Griffin, who played the 57th annual Fest won for Best Folk Album, and Che Apalache who performed at our PFS Venue last fall were nominated in that category as well!
Megan and Rebecca Lovell, formerly of the Lovell Sisters,now make up the heavier sound of Larkin Poe, and earned a nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album for their record Venom & Faith. The Lovell Sisters have a live DVD release of their performance at the 2007 Philadelphia Folk Festival.
Missy Raines and Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen were both nominated for Best Bluegrass Album. Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen played one of our FREE member concerts back in 2016! Keb’ Mo’ beat out both Calexico and Iron & Wine, and Yola for Best Americana Album. Keb’ Mo’ graced the mainstage with Taj Mahal in 2017, Iron & Wine in 2009, and Yola joined us just last year in 2019!
Yola, Calexico and Iron & Wine, and I’m With Her (featuring 2014 Fest Alum Sarah Jarosz) also teed up against each other as nominees in the Best American Roots Song and Best American Roots Performance categories, with I’m With Her taking the win for Best American Roots Song.
Overall, the 2020 Grammys have shown us that Folk music is alive and well, and you can experience live music from the world’s best Folkies by being a member of the Philadelphia Folksong Society and joining us at both our venue and at the 59th Annual Philadelphia Folk Festival. See you soon!
