The Philadelphia Folksong Society is thrilled to bring you Virtual Instrument Classes to #KeeptheMusicPlaying and #SecuretheFutureofFolk!
Throughout the constantly changing reality surrounding the global health crisis of COVID-19, the FIRST priority of the Society is the health and well-being of our community. As social distancing measures are currently making in-person classes an impossibility, we want to bring classes to the comfort of your home! Making music is so integral to our mental health, and we want to #keepthemusicplaying for everyone, including our students!
Sign-ups for all virtual classes will take place one week at a time, as we understand schedules and circumstances are changing rapidly. Classes will take place over the FREE video conferencing application, Zoom! Ukulele Classes begin on Tuesday, March 24th, and Guitar Classes begin on Thursday, March 26th, and both will continue weekly while social distancing measures are in place!
Current Class Options
Bring the Philadelphia Folk School to the comfort of your home with a crash course in the most adorable instrument around! On a week to week basis we will study and learn everything from the beginning, no prior music experience necessary. We’ll explore tuning the uke, proper posture, open position chords and learn a host of old folk music.
Bring the Philadelphia Folk School to the comfort of your home with Virtual Intermediate Ukulele! Learn the true joy of ukulele as we explore everything from traditional Hawaiian techniques to mainland swing strumming to baroque classical music. You’ll be surprised what this little instrument is capable of!
Start your musical journey with the world’s most popular instrument! We’ll start from the beginning, learning chords, finger-picking, and repertoire. Always wanted to play but never had the chance? We’ll have you making music in no time!
In Intermediate Guitar will learn more intermediate level chords, focus on more major scales and introduce minor scales and pentatonic scales. We will focus on right hand strumming technique in multiple time signatures and folk styles.
HOW DOES IT WORK? Sign ups for all virtual classes will take place one week at a time. Classes will take place over Zoom, a free video-conferencing app! You’ll need to have a Zoom account available on your computer or device to participate in class. We will send you a link to join the class in Zoom half an hour prior to each class, and you will be able to join the class by clicking on that link.
WHY ZOOM? Utilizing Zoom allows for teachers to see and interact with students live and in real time, so students can play along with the instructors, and ask questions. It also allows for sharing class materials simply and easily.
