JOE KYE – February 5th, 2021, 8pm

Born in Korea and raised in Seattle, violinist-looper and vocalist Joe Kye has drawn rave reviews since launching his music career in 2013, “discharging world[s] of emotion” and delivering “divine messages” with his lush string loops and eclectic style (Guitar World). Drawing upon his migrant upbringing, Kye blends indie-rock, jazz, classical, pop, and world folk to create a unique sound that “leaves everyone in awe” (Sac News and Review). With his innovative use of digital effects and looping, Kye weaves together diverse textures, catchy melodies, and rich, sweet vocals to create songs that groove, uplift, and empower listeners:

After studying music and culture at Yale University, Kye left a career as a high school educator to pursue music full-time. Following the release of his acclaimed 2015 EP, Joseph in the Well, Kye toured the United States with performances opening for world-renown cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Senator Bernie Sanders, along with a nationally broadcast performance on NPR’s Science Friday. He has been a keynote speaker for Multicultural Week at the Urban School of SF and worked with the United Methodist Church’s General Commission on Religion and Race.

Previous collaborations include the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, the Sacramento Ballet, Alvin Ailey Composer/Percussionist William Catanzaro, and LA hip-hop artist Jason Chu. Kye has performed in venues like Benaroya Hall (Seattle), Community Center Theater (TEDx Sacramento), the Legislative Back-To-Session Bash (California), NAMM MainStage (Anaheim), the Baryshnikov Arts Center (NYC), and the White House. Kye is a Fishman and Neunaber Audio Effects sponsored artist, and has studied violin with Marjorie Kransberg-Talvi, John Kim, and Jim Mihara.

Okay Fest Family! We’ve heard you LOUD AND CLEAR! You don’t love having the Digital Concert Venue on Facebook, but you did love the digital Festival… SO LET’S MOVE THE DIGITAL CONCERT VENUE TO OUR DIGITAL FESTIVAL PLATFORM.

ALL CONCERTS WILL GO LIVE AT THEIR START TIME WITH AN INTRO FROM PFS AND THE ARTIST WILL BEGIN AT FIVE PAST. IF YOU ARE LATE OR MISS THE CONCERT, DO NOT FRET AS IT WILL BE AVAILABLE TO VIEW ON DEMAND FOLLOWING THE EVENT!

Join us for Fest Favorite Patty Larkin:

PATTY LARKIN is a visionary of sound and wonder, a real deal version of artistry made of equal parts guitar wizardry, vocals shot through with soul and inventive lyrics that ripple across the terrain of the heart. Described as “riveting” (Chicago Tribune), “hypnotic” (Entertainment Weekly), and a “drop-dead brilliant” performer (Performing Songwriter), Patty has captured audiences for over 30 years with an imagination, enchantment, and technical artistry that has redefined the boundaries of the guitar driven singer songwriter.

With eleven studio albums and two live recordings under her belt, Patty mines the intersections of poetry and song with her innovative 14th release, Bird in a Cage, released on her own Road Narrows Records. Bird in a Cage puts poems from ten notable poets to song, including US Poet Laureates William Carlos Williams, Stanley Kunitz, Kay Ryan, Robert Pinsky and Billy Collins, for a new and haunting collection that pulses with the magic of lyricism. Poems are made to be shared aloud, and with Bird, Patty takes up that tradition and sets it aglow: her extraordinary musical shadings make each poem a star.

Bird was co-produced by Patty and Mike Denneen (Aimee Mann, Howie Day, Jen Trynin, Letters To Cleo), who Patty has called her “musical compass.” Their collaboration spanned 16 years and 5 albums. The project is dedicated to his memory.

NST & THE SOUL SAUCE MEETS KIM YULHEE – February 12th, 2021, 8pm

In 2017, NST & The Soul Sauce, an eight-piece roots reggae band, joined forces with a multi-award winning Korean pansori vocalist Kim Yulhee to create one of the most unique cross-genre mashup tunes that has never been heard before.

Their unique sound has elements of reggae/dub, jazz, afrobeat, funk, soul, psychedelic blended with deep rooted Korean traditional sound. Along with the influence of Korean traditional sound and philosophy, they’ve created what they have dubbed: “Korean reggae.” The most unexpected yet quavering, powerful spiritual sound of reggae and pansori will explode, dance and melt in your ear and heart.

I have personally very much been enjoying participating in a book club over Zoom, so I decided to create a PFS Member MUSIC club! We’ll pick a different album to listen to every month and discuss what we love, what we don’t, how the album affected us, and have a lovely conversation over Zoom! The PFS Member Music Club will take place on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 7pm! For this month, that’s February 10th!

For this month’s PFS Member Music Club, we’ll be individually listening to Joni Mitchell’s Blue and then coming together on Zoom to discuss the music!

Sign up to get the Zoom link.

Feel free to reach out to me via email to mhebertwilson@pfs.org with any questions or concerns. Stay healthy, and be well.

KEEP THAT FESTIVAL FEELING GOING ALL YEAR LONG WITH THE CABIN FEVER FEST EXACTLY SIX MONTHS UNTIL THE PHILADELPHIA FOLK FESTIVAL!
The Philadelphia Folksong Society, presenters of the oldest continuously run outdoor music festival in North America – the Philadelphia Folk Festival, invite you to join us for our long-hibernating CABIN FEVER FEST event from the safety and comfort of your own home.
What is Cabin Fever Fest?
Cabin Fever Fest is a celebration of music to mark only six months left in the long wait until the Philadelphia Folk Festival. Like the Philadelphia Folk Festival, it will feature unforgettable original performances from international headliners to local talent. Unlike the Festival, it will also feature an emphasis on music workshops and performance opportunities to digitally bring us closer together during these difficult winter months of isolation. Whether you’re a seasoned performer wanting to strengthen your skills, curious about an instrument or style, want your children to participate in a music lesson, or just want to sing along, ALL attendees will be able to watch these amazing workshops, but only VIP attendees will be able to participate in all of the workshops they choose.
What Do I Get With the VIP Ticket?
The VIP Ticket is for current PFS members only (become a member here for as little as $3 a month or $35 a year!) and includes THREE WEEKS of access to select PFS Archives (February 8-28th, 2021), access to participate in any and every workshop and open mic you want, and the opportunity to attend artist meet and greets via zoom! This is an INCREDIBLE VALUE for access to hundreds of hours of music and more!
How Do I Watch?
Tickets provide unlimited access to the Festival on one device at a time via the browser-based Festival (viewable on your phone, tablet, computer, television, projector, or screen of choice – same as the Philadelphia Folk Festival)!
I Attended the Digital Philadelphia Folk Festival – Is It Like That?
Yes! Think of Cabin Fever Fest as just a wintertime Philadelphia Folk Festival! The only difference will be that there will be one stage dedicated to participatory workshops for professional musicians and PFS members alike – with opportunities to learn, play, and/or sing along!
I Didn’t Attend the Digital Philadelphia Folk Festival – How Does This Work?
The Cabin Fever Fest is digital and available for you to watch on one device at a time from the comfort of your home. The event will start on Saturday, February 20th at 10am EST and end on Sunday, February 21st at 9pm EST. You’ll then be able to watch anything you miss (over 50 hours of music!) on demand for the next week until February 28th!
Who is Playing? What are the Workshops?
We are VERY excited to release the full lineup in the new year, and are offering deep discounts to our Folk Family who get their tickets before the amazing lineup drops. The workshops will be led by professional musicians and PFS members alike with opportunities for youth and adults to participate “onstage.”
Do I Have To Sit In Front Of My Screen All Weekend?
Can’t watch the Cabin Fever Fest on a certain day or don’t want to be in front of a screen all weekend? NO PROBLEM! Each day of the Fest you purchase will give you access to the concerts for a whole week following the event! For the second time in the history of music festivals (after the 2020 Philadelphia Folk Festival), you can be in two places at once and not miss a single performance of the event: watch any music you may have missed or rewatch your favorites again and again!

About Shirley Gnome

THE #1 NEW ARTIST FROM THE 2019 PHILADELPHIA FOLK FESTIVAL BASED ON YOUR SURVEYS!

“She’s dark, sexy, over-the-top and she’ll sing songs that will make sailors blush: meet cabaret comedian extraordinaire Shirley Gnome. How can one woman be so honestly obscene and so entertaining?” -Sunday Mail, Australia

From the west coast of Canada comes this multi-award winning cabaret musician, whose all-original, uncensored music about human nature is hilarious, honest, subversive, smart, empowering, taboo and not for the faint of heart. Her cleverly carnal lyrics go down smooth with her inappropriately gorgeous vocals, and her charm will disarm you through even the most provocative topics. Her outlandish cover songs transform top 40 hits into dark social satire.

After a surprise win of Patrick Maliha’s The People’s Champ of Comedy in 2012, Gnome began working her charms in comedy clubs, music venues, and burlesque festivals across Canada. Gnome’s underground cult status got an international upgrade when she hit the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2013, receiving rave reviews. She continued this success by touring internationally, wowing audiences and critics alike with sell out shows across Canada, the US, Australia, and New Zealand. She closed out the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s all-woman showcase UpFront in 2017. Her party anthem The Glitter Song went viral that same year, stacking up over half a million views.

She signed with 604 Records, and her 4th album Taking It Up The Notch debuted at #1 on the iTunes comedy charts in Canada when it debuted in 2017. She has released four full-length albums since her debut in 2009, which you can hear frequently on SiriusXM stations all over North America. You may have also heard her on Dan Savage’s chart topping podcast The Savage Lovecast.

Due to the constantly changing reality surrounding the global health crisis of COVID-19, the FIRST priority of the Society is the health and well-being of our community. Following the wild success of its first livestream with Mari Black on March 13, 2020, the Society has worked to keep the music playing, lift spirits, and make sure the artists in our extended Folk Family can continue to live day to day. We all know music is a universal language and we will be utilizing it as we present artists local, regional, and international – old favorites and new discoveries – to a digital audience of music lovers from the comfort of their own homes!

PFS’ bi-weekly Open Mic nights have been a fixture in the Philadelphia music community since they piloted in our pop-up venue in 2017. In 2019, PFS partnered with PASA to run one open mic a month to showcase original music and fulfill both organizations’ missions. We hope to continue to fulfill our missions while giving artists an outlet to perform and workshop their music.

While normally our Open Mic Nights are $3 for PFS Members and $5 for Not-Yet-Members, we are offering Digital Open Mic Night for FREE. If you have the ability and comfort in making a donation in any size, we would truly appreciate it!

WE WILL BE USING ZOOM FOR THE OPEN MIC NIGHT AND ENCOURAGE YOU TO DOWNLOAD THE ZOOM APP TO YOUR PHONE, TABLET, OR COMPUTER FOR EASE OF USE! DOWNLOAD AT: HTTPS://ZOON.US

We thank you so much for your support and understanding in a time of so much uncertainty. Sending much love to our entire extended folk family. Stay well.
